Spare these rods; spoil the child.

.spare the rod

Training up a child is the responsibility of every parent and should never be left solely in the hands of a school teacher or a home tutor. Proverbs 22 vs 15; “Train up a Child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”.

People say there’s always a black sheep in every family, but I have tried to find out where exactly in the bible it is permitted for our children (godly children) to be a black sheep.

As believers we should always look at what is written and not what the world says. Children are blessings from the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Proverbs 10 vs 22; “Also, the blessings of the lord maketh rich and addeth no sorrow to it”. If a child brings you sorrow, that is not God’s will, but the plan of the enemy.

I read a book some years ago written by my spiritual mother; Pst Faith Oyedepo (Raising Godly Children) and here are a few amongst the numerous steps she shared on this topic.

THE SPIRITUAL ROD

Show him from the word of God why his deed or attitude is wrong and make it clear to the child that his action was displeasing to God and he must repent of it.

2 Timothy 3 vs 16; “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”

THE PHYSICAL ROD

Using the physical rod like spanking should be very occasional or else the child becomes hardened.

If you have to beat the child at all, make sure you explain to him the reason for your actions and he knows love is behind it. Never beat your child out of anger!

BE DISCIPLINED

Undisciplined parents cannot discipline their children effectively. An Ounce of example is worth a ton of preaching, you must be careful to practice what you preach.

PRAYER

Praying with our children is important because in the process they learn the art of prayer.

Praying for them will help them walk in God’s plans for their lives.

LOVE

Let your actions portray that you love them. Learn to carry, hug, and kiss them.

Treat them respectfully as little people and not inferiors (It will help their self image).

Compliment them, always sandwich your corrections between showers of praises.

CONTROL

As soon as possible, children must be taught the fact that they will have authorities over them in life, which they have to submit to.

As they see you submit to others, they will recognize that they too must submit to higher authorities.

N/B: Training a child is not by experience, it takes grace and the help of the Holyspirit. If you are not born again you have no access to this divine virtue. If you would like to give your life to Jesus or maybe you one did and somehow lost track you can say this prayer of faith;

“ Lord Jesus Christ, I come to you today. Forgive me my sins and wash me with your blood. I believe you died for me and on the third day you rose again that I might be justified. I accept you today as my Lord and Saviour. Now I believe I am born again and a child of God. Thank you Jesus for saving me and giving me a fresh start”.

  1. hi Dr. Stella this is an interesting post. i find it absurd to hear a lot of parents say we have passed the age of spanking kids. i am still trying to convince a parent at my G+ christian women group. this generation kids are out of control. many laws in place are anti- Christ laws projected towards destroying Christian doctrines.
    thanks for this post.
    God Bless.
