The seat of our thoughts is in our mind, and it is our sole responsibility to discipline our mind to think on the right thing. A wise man once said” Sow a thought and you will reap an act, sow an act and reap a habit, sow a habit and reap a character, sow a character and reap a destiny”.
It is true that you can’t completely stop a thought from crossing your mind but you have the power to prevent it from developing and finally resulting into an action.
An addiction is the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming.
A few years back, I had a friend who told me he was on a 21 day therapy to quit drinking alcohol. According to him, there is a school of thought that says “it takes 21 days to break a habit”.
A lot of us have bought into theories and philosophies which most times provide only temporary relief. At some point in my life I struggled with a particular habit and sometimes I went beyond the “21 days” therapy, only to still fall for the same habit. I have come to discover some truths which I will be sharing in this post and I trust it will bless you greatly.
This is the first step to a new life. 2 Corin 5 vs 17 “Therefore if anyone be in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come”! At new birth there is a reconnection between you and God, and at that moment you have a fresh start.
If you have given your life to Christ previously, you would have to re-dedicate your life to Jesus Christ and you will be given another chance to start over.
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP
Someone once said “Who you follow determines what follows you”. Prov 22 vs 24-25 “Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul”
Choose your friends wisely, friendship should be by values and virtues. Remember, everyone will give account of himself and not of his clique. Spend time with wise people Prov 13 vs 20 “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed”
The farther you are from the presence of God, the more vulnerable you become. Do not miss Church services and the gathering of God’s children.
THE BOOKS YOU READ
I remember those days in secondary school, a lot of ladies would rather read romantic novels at the expense of even their school books. A lot of people get addicted to wrong sexual habits like masturbation merely by going through these materials.
Fill your mind with right thoughts from good materials. There are magazines and books that will edify and build you up and majority of these materials are affordable.
THE MOVIES YOU WATCH
We fail to recognise that acting is not the same as reality. The fact that people smoke, drink, and have sex recklessly in movies does not mean they do it in reality.
There are a lot of good movies by great writers, I particularly love Tyler Perry’s movies and he is just one out of a great list of them. These images are developed subconsciously in our minds and sometimes show up when we least expect.
I recently got a different insight into fasting and it has changed my life a lot. My spiritual father would say that “Faith gives value to our prayers, and prayers give value to our fasting”. Fasting without prayers and studying the word of God or spiritual materials (books, messages, etc) is merely hunger strike.
When you fast you are subduing your flesh and giving strength to your spirit and by doing this your spirit overpowers those carnal habits and addictions. Fasting should be regular; you could start with 1day per week and gradually increase the number of days.
MAKING A VOW
This is one of the strongest ways to break a habit. I made a vow of sexual purity to God and it has helped me stay away from such sin. Daniel 1 vs 8 “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself”
I heard someone say he made a vow to God not to sleep with any woman aside his wife, and that if he does, God should strike him dead instantly. Wow, that is some strong vow! Make a vow today, write it down and sign with the date. That vow will always keep you from falling again.
Here is a testimony that will encourage you;
“ I had been smoking marijuana for the past 14 years. During those times, I couldn’t eat without smoking. It wasn’t long when I started feeling serious pains in my stomach. Unless I smoked, the pains won’t stop.
A brother ministered to me and I genuinely gave my life to Christ. Three weeks after, the Bishop said we should go for water baptism. Also, he said he should tell God to take away whatsoever we didn’t want in our lives. I obeyed!
Then I prayed and I told God that I wanted to stop smoking and drinking alcohol. That was it! Since then, I stopped smoking and drinking alcohol. Also, there is no more stomach pains! Now, I eat very well! I thank God!” … Emmanuel, J.I
I have watched people struggle with several forms of addictions and have tried all manner of human concepts yet no change.
I have good news for you today, God’s concepts never fail because God himself has no capacity to fail. Give him a chance and watch your life take a dramatic
If you are set to make that decision today, kindly say this prayer of faith after me;
“ Lord Jesus Christ, I come to you today. Forgive me my sins and wash me with your precious blood. I believe you died for me and on the third day you rose again that I might be justified. I accept you today as my Lord and Saviour. Now I believe I am born again and a child of God. Thank you Jesus for saving me and giving me a fresh start” Amen.
